Shakuhachi
The Shakuhachi is an ancient bamboo flute from Japan which has 5 holes. It was used in the practice of blowing meditation by Buddhist Monks and is now a musical instrument that is played in all genres of music and has the greatest dynamic range of any flute in the world!
Shamisen
The shamisen is a three-stringed spiked lute; a banjo-like instrument played with a plectrum called a “bachi”. Sometimes know as the “Japanese Guitar” It used as a solo instrument as well as in ensembles and in a theatre context.
Shinobue
The shinobue is the horizontal folk flute of Japan. It is used in festivals, theatre performances, and ceremonies. It is the only flute indigenous to Japan.
WADAIKO (Japanese Drums) aka taiko
Traditional Japanese drums are referred to as “wadaiko” to distinguish it from other types of drums. Wadaiko have a variety of shapes, sizes, and sounds depending on its purpose and local customs. The most typical types of wadaiko are called “miyadaiko” (shrine drum) and “nagadou” (long bodied drum).
Sanshin is the a three-stringed lute originating in the southern islands of Okinawa. It has a skin made from snake skin and played with a plectrum made from buffalo horn. It is the first kind of lute to enter Japan and has the atmosphere of relaxation and joy of a tropical paradise.
